EV Charging Station Installation Tips and Installers

Owning an electric vehicle charging station is critical to ensuring that your electric vehicle is fueled up when you need it. However, setting up a charging station for your electric vehicle can be a bit intimidating when you factor in working with electrical outlets and wiring. Check out these essential electric vehicle charging station tips and tricks before diving into installation.

Tip 1—Location

The ideal location for a charging station is away from rain or sunlight and space for sufficient vehicle clearance. Ideal measurements: 18 inches from the ground for indoor installation and 24 inches off the ground for outdoor installations.
×

Tip 2—Tools

Typically, to insall an EVSE you need a Philips screwdriver, Stud finder, pencil/marker, and a beam level.

Tip 3—EV Levels

Recommended amperage for each Level 2 station:
  • JB Pro 40-50A breaker
  • JB Pro 75-100A breaker
  • AV 32A-40A breaker
  • CC 32A-40A breaker
×

Tip 4—EV Types

The plug in version is portable and can be used up to a 50A circuit. The hardwire units are required for circuits larger than 50A, have the 3ft pigtail installed and can be more labor intensive to install. Mounting and software is the same.

Tip 5—Mounting

Mounting on concrete walls may require you to pre-drill appropriately sized holes and use multi-set or wedge anchor hardware at both mounting points. Consult the mounting instructions for further information.

Tip 6—Cables

Coiling the charging cable too tightly around the charging station can make the cable feel warm to the touch. The charging cable should be loosly draped around the enclosure with large loops.

If you have a requirement to upgrade your circuit breaker or install a NEMA 14-50 wall outlet, it's best to call in a pro. The cost of installation can vary per household, depending upon your electrical requirements and/or necessary upgrades.

Installation Requirements

PLUG-IN VS. HARDWIRED

A plugged-in EVSE is a charging station that plugs into a 240V outlet (the same outlet a clothing dryer uses). Since plug-in units are portable, the only installation required is for the wall mounting station. Use the supplied screws to screw the mount into your wall surface. Once the bracket is mounted, you can slide the EVSE charger in and out easily; allowing you to use it at home and also detach it easily to take it with you.

If you don't have a 240V outlet in your desired charging location, contact a local pro and request a NEMA 14-50R outlet installation with #6AWG copper wire, and a 240V, 50A circuit. Make sure you request that the outlet is installed within one foot of where you want your EVSE station located.

A hardwired EVSE station requires a certified electrician to connect the station in a protected, NEMA-compliant enclosure. The list below details typical installation requirements for a hardwired unit:

- 2 pole, 40A breaker

- #8AWG copper wire with 2 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #12AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

- NEMA rated outdoor junction box with gasketed cover

 Recommend against GFI circuit breaker

Please, only use the pre-drilled opening on the bottom of the box for hardwire applications. We cannot honor the warranty if any other holes are added to the unit.

A fusible disconnect may be required within 6' of your EV charger device installation, please consult your local code.
